The Hatch End-Harrow Triathlon was first held in 2000, organised by the Hatch End Association to celebrate the turn of the century. It proved so popular that it is still going 25 years later!
In the run-up to the millennium, the Hatch End Association, led by the Chair Julian Maw, were exploring ideas to mark that iconic event. One of the committee members, Wayne Owide, happened to be a triathlete and proposed a novice triathlon for adults and juniors using local facilities – the Hatch End swimming pool at the Harrow Arts Centre, the adjacent Hatch End Playing Fields, and the surrounding roads. Julian recognised that this was a marvelous opportunity and led the team that set up the very first Hatch End-Harrow (HEH) triathlon in May 2000.
Initially intended as a one-off event, it was so successful that it became an annual race, supported by the Hatch End Association, and the local community as participants or volunteer race-makers. Julian and the Hatch End Association handed over the race to Jetstream Tri Club in 2007 but continued to support the event, and Julian introduced the award of a Family Cup which he last presented in May 2024.
While the focus remains to attract novices to the sport, the HEH Triathlon has also become popular among experienced athletes looking for a pre-season warm up race. Each year, the triathlon helps raise vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice.
In 2025 Jetstream, the Hatch End Association and Harrow Council celebrate the 25th anniversary of the HEH Triathlon; to mark this very special race, an Adult Relay option is available for the first time, to broaden access to this wonderfully addictive sport
